He attended several schools in the UK (London, Chelsea and Stoke Newing) and the University of Virginia, one of the most expensive Universitys at that time, where he studied old and new languages.
His life was dominated by poetry, sports (he was a good swimmer) and the military. He also had lots of fights with his 'father' about money, because during University he drank and gambled too much. Which makes him likable in my opinion :)
He died on 7th of October 1849 in Baltimore at the age of 41 which is kind of sad. He was alone and confused. The cause of his death is still unknown (murder, suicide, syphillis, drinking, alcoholabuse...)
Because of his problems and his aggressivness towards a lot of authors and publishers at his time he used to have a bad reputation. Thanks to Charles Baudelaire (Les Fleurs du Mal) and Stéphane Mallarmé (important french author, but not as important as Charles Baudelaire) he got famous in Europe which forced the US to appreciate his work as well.
Link to my favorite poem of E.A. Poe: The Raven (1845)
He clearly affected one of my favorite musicians, Ville Valo, and therefore I appreciate him. A lot.
Love,
Mila
